Weed inhibiting joint filling sand – how does it work
-
The environmentally friendly joint filling material is composed of a mixture of oven-dried and nutrient poor minerals. This unique mixture creates almost desert-like conditions in the joints – due to a natural pH value – limiting weed growth and sprouting.Dansand joint filling sand is dried and consists of polished (round) grains of sand making it easy to sweep down into the joints.Dried joint filling sand ensures tight and compact joints. Earth-humid joint filling sand cannot be swept down into narrow joints.

When can I use Dansand joint filling sand?
-
We recommend a joint width of minimum 1 mm to ensure a durable and flexible pavement while also ensuring adequate filling of joints. Dansand joint filling sand saves time through its weed inhibiting and oven-dried qualities and because it is composed of round grain forms. The colour is light beige.

When can I use Dansand stone dust filling material?
-
Dansand stone dust filling material is composed of crushed material and is weed inhibiting. The products requires a little more care to achieve good filling of joints, but good joint firmness is quickly achieved. The colour is a beautiful steel gray to dark grey depending on humidity. Some bigger grains will appear with very narrow joints, and these will not be swept into the joints. These are simply swept up and removed. Width of joints; 1-20 mm.

Why do I need joint filling material?
-
You need to use joint filling sand, because joint filling sand helps in keeping your pavement stones in place and works as a distributor of pressure on pavements frequented by cars, for example. It is therefore important that you have joints of minimum 1 mm – and preferably more – allowing sufficient space for the joint filling sand to be swept and vibrated down into the joints and become completely tight.
If the joints are not completely tight, dirt will accumulate in air pockets.
If joint filling sand is not used at all a ’jungle’ will quickly appear. Seeds fall into all the cracks.
If joint filling material is not used flaking of edges will also occur, if the area is frequented by traffic.

Is joint filling sand hazardous for my pets?
-
Dansand joint filling sand is not hazardous for humans or animals, and that is why Dansand joint filling sand does not need to be labelled as aggressive or annoying for the skin.

How durable is Dansand joint filling sand?
-
Dansand joint filling sand is long-lasting – depending on conditions – but has been tested against rain for 10 years without loosing its weed inhibiting effect.
Durability is best ensured through careful filling of joints and fast repairing of holes with new sand.
This is a mixture of nutrient-poor minerals with a high pH value – and it is decomposed in the same manner. And that is the ingenuity of Dansand joint filling sand.

Do I need to maintain my joints?
-
Picture 1: Newly swept pavement with filled jointsYes – to some extent. The joints need to be filled in order to avoid getting dirt or other contamination in joints. Dansand recommends that you sweep your pavements clean and refill the joints with a small amount of Dansand joint filling sand. This will also make them look nice.
Dansand is not a toxic substance – but a very poor growth medium, wherein nothing can grow. If Dansand joint filling sand is contaminated with dirt or organic material the weed inhibiting effect may be reduced or disappear depending on the amount of dirt.

Is a renovation of my joints as weed inhibiting as a new pavement?
-
Picture 2: Pavement stone with dirt on the sideBefore a renovation you must first ensure that all existing weeds are completely removed, but you must also ensure that there is no dirt or other contamination on joint sides. A renovation of your joints will reduce the amount of weeds, but it is difficult to get the same good result compared to a new pavement.
Dansand is not a toxic substance – but a very poor growth medium, wherein nothing can grow. If Dansand joint filling sand is contaminated with dirt or organic material then it is really no longer Dansand joint filling sand weed inhibiting effect may be reduced.

Why do I have weeds in my joints after using Dansand joint filling sand?
-
Picture 3
Picture 4Joints can be leaky – i.e. they are not filled. It is therefore best to vibrate your joints after they have been filled with Dansand joint filling sand. The best way to do this is with a maximum of 3 passages over the same area, parallel to the joints and 1 time diagonally.

The base may rise up into the joint through over-vibrating and thereby push the Dansand joint filling sand up and over. Likewise vibrating before the filling of joints may cause the sand of the base to rise up into the joints and dilute the joint filling sand enabling weeds to take hold.
See picture no. 3 & 4. Dirt on the side and almost no Dansand joint filing sand.

I get white rims on my pavement.
-
In the case of extreme drying conditions white rims may appear on pavement stones and filling material. This is caused by a strong upward flow of humidity bringing salts to the surface. These are however dissolved by rainwater.

White stains on the base/plinth?
-
Remove them with water and if they appear again consider cleaning with Dansand® Paving Stone & Block Cleanser and thereafter with Dansand® Paving Stone & Block Impregnation – the result may differ so always try on a test area first.
But never use Dansand joint filling sand or Dansand stone dust filling material up against the base/plinth – instead use laying sand or other joint filling material for the inner joint. Weeds will rarely grow near the base/plinth.

Why can’t I use Dansand joint filling sand under roofs, e.g. carports and other places, where there is no rain?
-
First of all; weeds do not grow, where it does not rain – so just use regular sand, for example the laying sand for your pavement stones. Humidity brings dissolved salts being deposited where the water evaporates. Salt extraction may therefore occur on permanently dried locations, as these are not insulated from outdoor areas in regards to humidity. Alternatively you can impregnate your pavement with Dansand Paving Stone & Block Impregnation.

Does Dansand joint filling sand inhibit algae and moss?
-
Moss and algae require permanently humid surroundings and are therefore most often seen after a long and humid period in winter. With the drying effect of spring most of these disappear, but not in shaded areas. These can become like new by using Dansand Paving Stone & Block Cleanser and subsequent impregnation will ensure that the moss does not reappear.

How much filling sand do I need?
-
That depends entirely on how big your pavement stones are and how wide your joints are. With 3 mm joints for the popular Manor pavement block 5-7 kg per m2 is used.
